How does it work technically?

Any podcast app that supports "Add by URL" or "Add by RSS" can play a private podcast. When a listener taps their unique subscription link, the app recognizes it as a podcast feed and adds it. From that point on, it behaves like any other show in their library.

What about Spotify?

Spotify doesn't support adding shows by RSS URL in the traditional way. However, through Spotify's Open Access program, some hosting platforms (including Transistor) can enable private podcasts on Spotify. The listener experience is slightly different — they authenticate via a web page before the show appears in their Spotify library.
